Koshi or Zaphir – What Is the Difference?

Koshi and Zaphir are often mentioned in the same breath, and they share a great deal. Both are tuned musical instruments with eight metal rods inside the tube and both are used the world over for meditation, yoga practise and sound healing. They are made by different workshops, though, and they have distinct voices.

The Koshi is built on a bamboo body, which gives it a warm, soft tone that feels rounded and intimate. The Zaphir is built on a cellulose resonance tube, which gives it a brighter, crystal-clear sound that sparkles. Neither is better than the other; they simply suit different rooms and different moods. A Koshi tends to sink gently into a quiet space, while a Zaphir adds light and shimmer. Many practitioners keep both and reach for whichever matches the session in front of them.
